Joe Biden makes huge promises to the teachers while election 2020 is a year ahead. He vowed to give teachers the respect and resources that they deserve. "We're going to provide you with the support you need and the respect you deserve," he said
On Sunday, Joe Biden spoke to the members of the United Federation of the Teachers who had gathered at the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan for the annual Teacher Union day.
His 20 minutes speech revolved around the teachers’ problems and education reforms. He admired the teachers for their hard work and struggle. He spoke about their problems, and their frustrations they might have about not feeling supported.
His wife, Jill Biden, also accompanied him to the event. Jill is a community college professor.
She stressed that Joe being a husband to a teacher is well-aware of the problems that the teachers face. "He knows how hard we, all of you here, how hard we fight for our students," she said. "He knows we can't do this alone. " Biden said that the teachers should know that he and his wife would be the best choice for the teachers in the White House.
Biden said that the next Secretary of Education should be someone with teaching experience. He promised to increase the salaries of the teachers if he wins. He promised to double the number of school psychologists, counselors and social workers and eliminate student debt for teachers after 10 years. Moreover, he announced to increase federal funding for low-income Title I schools from $15 billion to $45 billion a year.
At this event, he didn’t forget to mention the strike by the members of the Chicago Teachers’ Union that started this past Thursday. He said: “We also know that no educator wants to go on strike. It’s the last damn thing you want to do. The teachers’ strike in Chicago right now, you know every one of them would much rather be in the classroom, for real. For real – with their kids.”
UFT, a community of about 1.5 million members, has not yet endorsed any of the election candidates. Will these promises by Biden bring him the support of the teachers?
