A while ago a headline caught my eye:"Chinese Doctor Alters Babies Genes."
That headline got me thinking about what the true pros and cons of such a thing actually are.
One one hand: the idea of changing a persons natural make up might be a horrific thought for a lot of people. Plus how do you decide who can have the procedure and who can't? If it's dependant on money, then the rich could potentially create picture perfect people who are free of disease, while those less fortunate are left to be... well, for lack of a better word, the unfortunate diseased and possibly deformed. A final thought I had was, would these people be viewed as a completely different sub-species entirely?
On the other hand: a technology like this could free humans from diseases that have plagued our world for decades. We could stop people from being brought into the world with any number of physical problems. Think of how happy the world could become if we could (over a large stretch of time) eradicate disease and repopulate much of the world with a set of what would essentially be genetically perfect people!
So what do you think? Is it right? Is it wrong? Could it be useful, or would it hurt our society? What other arguments can you come up with, because I am only scratching the surface on this difficult debate!
Can't wait to hear from you!
